A guest blog written by John Broadbent, Smart Manufacturing and Industry 4.0 Evangelist, Realise Potential
This year Industry 4.0 is a decade old, yet for many manufacturers, it’s still a misunderstood and elusive thing to grasp. Some are wondering what all the hype is about, if it applies to them and if so, what to do and how to get started?
Is it just another fad?
The good news is that SMEs can learn from the bigger end of town, from examples such as the World Economic Forum’s “Global Lighthouse Network” (GLN), who’ve paved the way with various implementations, now with audited results.
Sadly, much confusion still abounds in Australian manufacturing as to what Industry 4.0 is, how it applies to various sectors, what are the benefits, where to focus, what projects to initiate, what is the risk-reward, will it work for my business … and on it goes.
What is now evident is that those who’ve embarked on their own journey of digital transformation have reaped significant rewards and return on investment, whether they’ve applied it across their entire supply chain or only within the four walls of their production facilities.
The larger manufacturers no longer have an excuse, while the SMEs are understandably cautious. After all, a major mistake can be costly and even fatal to a small business.
What to do?
Firstly, ignore the hype. Secondly, demystify Industry 4.0 to learn what it IS and ISN’T!
Thirdly, listen to what others who are further along the well-defined ‘maturity path’ already know and learn from them, and finally, understand how you can apply their learnings to your own manufacturing business.
The rubber then hits the road and you too have commenced a strategic journey of digital transformation that will revolutionise the way you think about what you make.
